Argentina: A Great Place to Learn Spanish:

Many people travel to Argentina to polish up or start anew with their Spanish skills. There are many traditional methods in Argentina, and Buenos Aires specifically, such as going to a Spanish school, volunteering, taking on a private tutor, or learning online. However, if you're looking to add some libations to loosen up your timid Spanish tongue, the people who created Spanglish, have an option for you: Beerlingual.

What to Expect:

Beerlingual is pretty straight forward. Their website has their next events listed, giving the time and place, which is typically a popular bar (such as Sugar Bar) in one of the trendier barrios of Buenos Aires including Palermo, San Telmo, and Recoleta. Once you've found the event for you, it's best to send an email RSVP to the Beerlingual team: info@beerlingual.com. RSVPing helps the event staff ensure that the check-in goes smoothly, so you can get to the fun more quickly.

Once you've RSVP'd, show up! Check-in opens at 7:00 p.m. and runs until 7:30 p.m. Bring exact change (as of Feb. 2012, the entry fee is 50 pesos which is about $12 USD) and check-in. Often times entry comes with free beer, food, or passes in to other hot spots in the city. The Beerlingual team and Quizmaster for the night will put locals and travelers, a mix of Spanish and English speakers, into teams. After everyone is sorted with a team, the quiz fun begins!

Teams come up with their own names, speaking in both Spanish and English. After team names are figured, the Quizmaster starts serving up questions for the team to deliberate upon. Questions try to incorporate both Argentine and American trivia. For example, a question might be: **“What Lord of the Rings actor spent part of his childhood in Argentina and speaks Spanish with an Argentine accent?” Once the question is given, team members discuss, debate, even argue their way to a group answer. You might just pick up some lunfardo along the way.

Winning teams get things like free beer, food, and passes in to hip night clubs and other spots to hop to after the Beerlingual festivities draw to a close. Chances are you'll get a photo or two snapped of yourself hard at work in the language mayhem along with your team members. You can find images of past events on Beerlingual's website, Facebook, and Twitter pages.
